Codex vs Claude Code in 2026: Which One Should You Use? (From a Developer Who Uses Both)

In short: Codex (OpenAI) is the best value: it is included from the free ChatGPT plan and shines on tasks run in the background in the cloud. Claude Code (Anthropic) goes further on long, complex tasks, with more control and customization, but it requires a paid plan from $20 a month.

I use both. Claude Code is my main daily tool: I build my SaaS products with it, including Kreatoai, and this website. Codex complements it. Here is the comparison as of October 1, 2026, with sources, because both tools change almost every week.

What Codex and Claude Code Are

Both are coding agents: you describe a task in plain language, they read your project, edit files, run commands and tests, then show you the result. This is no longer autocomplete, it is a virtual developer you steer.

  • Codex is OpenAI's coding agent. Since July 9, 2026 it lives in the ChatGPT desktop app (Windows and Mac, Linux in preview since August), next to the Chat and Work modes. It also comes as a command-line tool (CLI), an editor extension, cloud tasks started from the web, mobile or Slack, and code review on GitHub.
  • Claude Code is Anthropic's coding agent. It runs in the terminal (macOS, Linux, WSL and native Windows), in VS Code, Cursor and JetBrains, in a desktop app, on the web (claude.ai/code) and on mobile. It also plugs into Slack, GitHub Actions and GitLab CI/CD.

The Models Behind Each Tool

  • Codex has defaulted to GPT-6.1 Sol since September 29, 2026, which OpenAI describes as close to its flagship GPT-6 Astra at a much lower cost. GPT-6 Luna is the fast, cheap model. GPT-5.5 leaves Codex on October 14.
  • Claude Code uses Claude Opus 5.5 (released September 22, 2026, with a 1-million-token context, meaning how much text it can keep in mind) and Claude Sonnet 5.5 for lighter tasks.

Watch out for comparisons going around: many still list GPT-6 Sol as Codex's default model, but GPT-6.1 Sol replaced it at the end of September.

Pricing and Usage Limits

Codex is included in every ChatGPT plan:

  • Free: included, with low limits
  • Go: $8 a month
  • Plus: $20 a month
  • Pro: $100 to $500 a month depending on the tier, with no 5-hour limit
  • Business: $20 per user per month

On Plus, OpenAI lists 15 to 160 messages every 5 hours with GPT-6.1 Sol, 5 to 45 with GPT-6 Astra and 350 to 3,000 with GPT-6 Luna. Cloud tasks use up that allowance faster.

Claude Code is not available on the free Claude plan:

  • Pro: $20 a month ($17 billed yearly)
  • Max 5x: $100 a month
  • Max 20x: $200 a month
  • Team: $25 per standard seat ($20 yearly), $125 per Premium seat ($100 yearly)

Limits work on a rolling 5-hour window plus a weekly limit, shared between claude.ai and Claude Code. Anthropic does not publish absolute numbers.

On the API (pay as you go), Opus 5.5 costs $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens. GPT-6.1 Sol is reported at around $2 and $10.

Pricing verdict: to get started or for moderate use, Codex clearly wins. For heavy daily use, Claude's Max plans stay predictable, but cost more.

Security and Autonomy

A coding agent runs commands on your machine, so what it is allowed to do matters.

  • Codex works in an operating-system sandbox (an isolated environment). By default it can edit project files but asks before going further, and network access is off. Three presets: automatic, read-only, full access.
  • Claude Code offers several permission modes: manual, auto-accept edits, plan mode (it proposes a plan you approve before any change) and auto mode. Since September 25, 2026, auto mode is the starting mode: a second model checks every risky action before letting it through.

Either way, keep Git clean and review what goes to production. An agent saves a huge amount of time, it does not replace review.

Instruction Files: AGENTS.md and CLAUDE.md

Both tools read a file describing your project: commands, conventions, pitfalls. It makes the difference between an agent that guesses and an agent that knows your code.

  • Codex reads AGENTS.md (global, at the repository root and in subfolders).
  • Claude Code reads CLAUDE.md and also keeps an automatic memory. Good news: it now reads AGENTS.md when there is no CLAUDE.md, and a setting loads both.

Many articles still claim the opposite. In practice, one well-written AGENTS.md now serves both tools.

Extensions and Integrations

Both tools now support MCP (Model Context Protocol, the standard that lets an AI use your tools: database, CRM, browser, social networks…), hooks (scripts triggered automatically at given steps), subagents and skills (reusable know-how).

The differences:

  • Codex CLI is open source (Apache-2.0 license, written in Rust): you can read and modify its code.
  • Claude Code is not open source, but its ecosystem of plugins, skills and MCP servers is very rich, and it can be driven programmatically (Agent SDK, headless mode).
  • Codex reviews your GitHub pull requests when you comment "@codex review"; Claude Code does the same through GitHub Actions and its code review.

MCP is also how I made Kreatoai controllable from both ChatGPT and Claude: the same standard works for both.

Performance: What Do the Benchmarks Say?

Take the numbers with caution, as each vendor publishes its own tests.

  • According to Anthropic (September 22, 2026), Opus 5.5 scores 66.4% on Terminal-Bench 4.0, versus 57.9% for GPT-6 Astra.
  • An independent test by Artificial Analysis, reported by CatDoes, gives 52.5% for Opus 5.5 versus 39.8% for GPT-6 Sol on Terminal-Bench, but at a cost per task of $1.34 versus $0.25.

In other words: Claude often goes further, Codex does more per dollar. CatDoes sums it up well: "Claude tends to spend more and get further, Codex tends to get more done per dollar."

My Take: Which One Should You Choose?

Choose Codex if:

  • you are getting started or on a tight budget: it is included from the free ChatGPT plan;
  • you want to run tasks in parallel in the cloud and get pull requests back;
  • you mostly work on GitHub and want automatic PR reviews.

Choose Claude Code if:

  • you work on large codebases, refactors or long tasks;
  • you want fine control: plan mode, permissions, hooks, skills;
  • you want the agent that goes furthest on its own, even if it costs more.

How I work: Claude Code for architecture and big jobs, Codex as a complement for targeted tasks and second opinions. A shared AGENTS.md makes switching between them almost seamless. And Codex can now import a Claude Code setup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Codex free?

Yes, Codex is included in the free ChatGPT plan, with low usage limits. For regular use you need at least the Plus plan at $20 a month.

Is Claude Code free?

No. Claude Code requires at least the Claude Pro plan ($20 a month, $17 billed yearly) or pay-as-you-go API usage.

Can you use Codex and Claude Code on the same project?

Yes. Both read AGENTS.md, support MCP and work on Git. Many developers use one to design and the other to check.

Which one is best for a beginner?

Codex, for its entry price and ChatGPT integration. Claude Code becomes worth it as your projects grow.

Do you need to know how to code to use a coding agent?

For a prototype, not necessarily. For a product in production (security, payments, customer data), yes: you need to understand and review what the agent writes. That is exactly the part I take care of for my clients.
